Group Therapy: Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

Stacked stones on a rocky beach.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a therapeutic approach that combines elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with mindfulness practices. It was initially developed to help prevent the recurrence of depression. MBCT draws heavily from the mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program created by Jon Kabat-Zinn and integrates it with cognitive therapy techniques.

The core components of MBCT include:

1. Mindfulness Practices: These include meditation, body scans, and mindful breathing exercises that help individuals become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations in the present moment without judgment.

2. Cognitive Therapy: This involves identifying and challenging negative thought patterns that contribute to depression or anxiety. By recognizing these patterns, individuals can learn to respond to them in a more balanced and less automatic way.

An evidence-based approach for treating mood disorders:

MBCT is particularly beneficial for preventing depression relapse, but it has also been found helpful for
anxiety, stress, and overall emotional well-being:

1. Depression: MBCT is primarily used to prevent the recurrence of depression, and research has demonstrated it to be as effective as antidepressants (Kuyken et al., 2015). It helps by breaking the cycle of depressive thinking and reducing the risk of relapse.

2. Anxiety: MBCT can be effective in managing anxiety disorders. The mindfulness component helps individuals reduce worry and rumination by focusing on the present moment.

3. Stress: MBCT is useful for reducing stress and improving emotional regulation. It encourages a non-reactive, non-judgmental approach to stressful situations.

4. General Well-being: Beyond clinical issues, MBCT can enhance overall well-being by promoting a greater sense of calm, clarity, and emotional balance.

Who should attend:

MBCT is effective for individuals suffering from moderate anxiety or depression, as well as those who have experienced significant depressive episodes in the past.

MBCT is not recommended for individuals currently experiencing a severe depressive episode, active psychosis, mania, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
